Moreda Dairy

Baby cows confined in individual hutches at Moreda Dairy in Petaluma, Sonoma County.

Moreda Dairy is the largest dairy factory farm in Sonoma County, confining upwards of 1,500 cows and creating an estimated 55 million pounds of animal waste annually.

This facility is located within the San Antonio Creek watershed and directly next to Laguna Lake, which flows into the Chileno and Walker Creeks. These creeks have been identified as significant areas of pollution from animal wate and the watershed is impaired due to bacteria and other microbes that are commonly caused by animal waste runoff.

Moreda Dairy also has hundreds of small calf crates that confine baby cows in isolation. These calves are taken from their mothers shortly after birth to maximize the amount of milk that can sold. Male calves will be sold for meat as they cannot produce milk. Female calves will eventually replace “spent” mature dairy cows.

Moreda Dairy uses an estimated 35 million gallons of water every year and stores untreated animal waste in a manure lagoon larger than an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

This facility harms animals, our water quality, and public health.
